High pressure means more air pushing down on us. Find an H on the map. This is the symbol for high pressure. 1. What are the characteristics of a High pressure? 2. Compare it to the cloud map-the first map. Describe the cloud cover around the H. 3. Look at the physical map-the second map. Describe the conditions around the H. 4. How closely does the description of the H correspond to what is on the map? Low pressure means less air pushing on us. Find an L on the map. This is the symbol for low pressure. 5. What are the characteristics of a Low pressure? 6. Compare it to the cloud map. Describe the cloud cover around the L. 7. Look at the physical map. Describe the conditions around the L. 8. How closely does the description of the L correspond to what is on the map? Look at our barometer history. Compare it to the physical map. 9. Explain what is happening to our barometer and why it is changing.
Section 2-WIND SPEED, WIND DIRECTION AND THE PHYSICAL MAP Air rotates clockwise around a High and counter clockwise around a low. 10. What is the wind speed and direction here? 11. What feature is making our wind blow from that direction? 12. Predict our wind speed and direction over the next few hours.
Section 3-WIND SPEED and BAROMETER Changes in barometer change the speed of the wind. Look at the wind speed and barometer over the last day. 13. What is the relationship between wind speed and barometer trend? 14. Look at a physical map. Can you find the weather feature that caused this change? Section 4-Isobars Isobars are lines of equal barometric pressure. Each white line is an isobar. 15. What is the relationship between the isobars and the wind speed on the map above?
Section 6-Fronts go to Weather Underground 19. List the 4 types of weather fronts. 20. Find one of the fronts on the physical map. Write down which one you found. Make a chart with the following conditions of two places- temperature, wind direction, barometer, barometer trend and dew point. Pick a city in front of the front. List the conditions in the chart before the front comes through. Pick a city behind the front. List the conditions in the chart after the front has passes 21. Are these changes consistant with the passing of that type of front? |
